It is important that learners with intellectual disability have access to the National Curriculum Statement. Teachers are finding it difficult to adapt the curriculum so as to allow for all learners, irrespective of their abilities, to participate in the same lesson.

Currently, the Department of Education is training all Foundation Phase Teachers on the implementation of the New Assessment Policy 2007 and the Reading Strategy 2007.

One of the sessions of the training is devoted to equipping teachers with the knowledge and skills to implement curriculum differentiation in Gr R to Gr 3.

Read the module which is being used at the training and make inputs on strategies that you have developed.

In the Tshwane South District the inclusive education specialists try to look at the unique situation and adapt and differentiate in line with the NCS to empower the educators and to reduce and remove the barriers of learners.

Can I request that the Inclusive education specialist be also trained on the implementation of the New Assessment Policy 2007 and the Reading Strategy 2007.

Contact your provincial head of GET Curriculum to find out when the training of Foundation Phase officials is taking place. The training on the Assessment Policy and the Reading Strategy in 2008 is focusing on this group. It is critical that all curriculum advisors become acquainted with strategies to differentiate the assessment tasks so as to give guidance to teachers and Institution-level (Site-based) Support Teams.
