Many of our schools offering Consumer Studies for the first time are selecting this Practical option, simply because the financial demands are not so huge.  Also the products selected can be even more cost effective if recycled materials are used.  Let us share examples of the products selected by our learners.

One of my school principlas made it compulsory that all Grade 8 learners knew how to knit.  Her rationale behind this great move was that she wanted to be  sure that they would be able to occupy themselves in old age!  Sadly the principal, Pixie Hardman, has since died, but I am sure that she left many a young learner with a skill for life.

Would it not be great if all our principals had a similar vision?

Hi Didee

I totally agree with your sentiment. I must confess however that I am no knitter! Still if this is a route that others want to take then there are some excellent websites that offer free patters. The one I stumbled across today is http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/ It really is full of patterns for numerous different articles.

Do others out there have a favourite pattern site?

Hi Andryn,

I loved the site. There are dozens of product ideas for our teachers and learners.  Knitting is therapeutic, as is crocheting, so maybe you should consider it as time usefully spent. Wink I am eagerly awaiting further contributions from Thutong members and  browsers.
