Support in Assessment

All learners who have been assessed through the SIAS and have been found to experience barriers when it comes to assessment of the outcomes that they have attained, are eligible to be supported. The support must not only be provided in tests and exams but throughout the year in all continuous assessment processes.

It is therefore critical to outline how this support can be practically provided by the school and teachers within the framework of the available staff and time. It is advisable that the Institution Level Support Team identifies the learners for whom the support and adaptations will be provided and outline the measures to be taken in their Individual Support Plans. Schools must take care that this system should not be abused to provide learners with an unfair advantage.

Support and Adaptations in FET

Provinces currently have their own procedures in place based on the Draft Guidelines of the Department of Education: Support and adaptations for learners who experience barriers in assessment.

Schools have an obligation to identify learners who need support in assessment and fill in the necessary application forms which are to be submitted to the Provincial Assessment Committee. Decisions about who is eligible for the support and adaptations must be sent back to the school as soon as possible in the new academic year.

Parents who have problems in obtaining approval for the support, can contact their local district director who would refer them to the official responsible.
