The answer to the above question is found in the following hints:

  • Teachers  should not teach language structures such as parts of speech, figures of speech, idioms, proverbs  in isolation but should teach them  using  authentic texts such as sentences, passages, pictures and images so that learners can understand how language is used in real life situations.
  •  Teachers  should ask learners to construct authentic sentences  such as statements, questions etc.
  •   Learners  should be taught how to use language structures  to express  functions such as thanking, complaining, expressing condolences, apologising etc. This  will improve  learners language proficiency in their home as well as their  additional languages.
