Although South African Sign Language (SASL) is the natural language of Deaf learners in South Africa it has not been taught in schools for the Deaf as a subject before.

The development of an SASL CAPS on Home Language level has been a major achievement in the education of the Deaf. It has as aim the improvement of quality and equality in education.

The SASL CAPS can compare to any Home Language curriculum e.g. English isiXhosa, Sesotho, Afrikaans, etc. It was possible to develop SASL accordingly as SASL is a complete language with its own grammar, vocabulary and syntax.  Like any language, whether spoken or signed, SASL is potentially capable of communicating an infinite number of ideas.  It is a visual-gestural language that uses the hands, the body and facial expressions (including lip-patterns) to express meaning, and the eyes to perceive the meaning.

The purpose of this Learning Space is to share information regarding the teaching and learning of SASL.
