I would like to see more schools nvolved in tis highly successful activity. I have represented SA at the World Debating Championships for 3 years. Teaching languages Yes, it is neccessary to teach children how to speak and use sentence structures correctly in order to communicate with other learners and to extend their vocabulary and word proficience

Teaching languages The use of texts is the best way to teach Language Structures in any languages. I find that learners enjoy it and also the pictures to illustrate the spesific information.

Teaching languages It is quite difficult to get learners to do these cultural "speaking" becasue 90% of our students do English as a Home Language, even though they speak it as a 2nd or 3rd language at home. Schools also get "snobbish" about whether or not a specific school's learners are good enough to particpate in debates and public speaking. It's really tough.

Teaching languages I agree when one says that a text is a good way to teach learning structures, however i feel that the spoken word such as radioes and television is a more accessible means of teachng. also the learners enjoy it more. it is also more immediate to the way they speak in eveyday situations.
