In 2001, the Department of Education launched the National Strategy for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education (NSMSTE) in pursuit of improving the quality of teaching and learning in Mathematics and Science. In 2005 government re-affirmed its commitment to the NSMSTE by reviewing the Strategy and setting a target of doubling the number of learners passing high level Grade 12 Mathematics and Science to 50 000 by 2008. The goal was to contribute to the skills deficits that have been reported in the sectors of the economy that require competence in mathematical and scientific skills.
