A lot leaner and more compact than last year's PAT for CAT. The scenario can easily be researched and there are a lot of information available. (Thanks!!)

Yet the instructions are still a bit too wordy and not adequate for learners with limited language abilities. And please give us an 'example PAT' so that learners can have an idea of how content should be presented.

The rubric also seems fine although it could have been shorter - it covers all that is needed so that is excellent.

School based assessment (SBA) remains as prescribed in the National Protocol on Assessment and the CAT Subject Assessment Guidelines (SAG), namely:

First Term: 1 test + 1 task

Second Term: 1 task + 1 exam

Third Term: 1 test + 1 task (Gr 10 & 11) 1 test + 1 exam (Gr 12)

Fourth Term: 1 exam + PAT (Gr 10 & 11) External exam, including the PAT (Gr 12)

The specifics for these tests, tasks and exams will differ from one teacher to the other depending on the way the teacher's Work Schedule is sequenced.

How comprehensive should a task be?

Not an easy question to answer, CATTeacher.

It depends on the topic and focus of the task, the form of the task (practical assignment, project, theory assignment, open book assignment, etc.) and the detail you want to assess.

My advice would be: Keep it simple and manageble for learners as well as for you, the teacher. I.e.  don't design PAT-like tasks that will take weeks to do or to mark.

The focus should be on quality, NOT quantity.

Remember: YOU are in control of your PoA for the year and the type of tasks that will support teaching and learning according to YOUR own work schedule and that will prepare learners for the end-of-year exams.

The marks that such a task/assignment would count, will also depend on the form of the task, the time available for completion and the detail of the assessment instrument (how fine the criteria are broken down), etc. (The marks indicated in the example assessment plan in the SAG, are only a suggestion)

I think somebody should start with a database of scenario's.  My storytelling is getting very boring!

I must say my creativity is also being tested!

My advice is: think of things that happens to you on a daily basis - the help you have to give to colleagues and learners to assist them when working on computers, etc. Translate these into questions and scenarios. It helps.
