The introduction of GIS in the Geography FET curriculum has been a major breakthrough in the history of education in the country. This section of the content is going to offer creative ways of learning beyond the four walls of the classroom. Learners will be taught skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication and computer literacy. These skills are relevant to the world of work which must be able to absorb our learners.

Despite the challenges of skilled teachers in this area and lack of hardware and software; we must be excited that our learners will be exposed to the theoretical content in the meantime. Let us also seek opportunities of establishing some links with the private sector in contributing towards the upliftment of our communities. Some of these private companies are willing to offer hardware or software or any kind of help; depending on the school's needs.

Let's enjoy GIS in Geography!

I just want to find out if this is the same technology used in the cellphones. I am buying a cellphone ith a navigator system, how does this relate to this section of the curricullum.

I think its excellent to include technology into geography, because the two are so closely linked.

On the other side, i think more attention should be given to mapwork at school, if you ask Grade 12 learners what they find difficult they usually refer to mapwork.  With GIS, would mapwork also be included as part of the technology based improvement ?

Hi Masemulam, the same way your phone will direct you to your destination through its navigation sytem, is the same way learners will discover a place they are looking for on a map when doing GIS. Learners will begin to appreciate the use of technology in applying the fundamental principle of Geography- that location is important in people's lives.

Hi Debs, you are so right that mapwork is still a challenge to most of our learners when, in fact, it should not. The tip is teachers should start teaching this section of the curriculum thoroughly in Grade 10 so that by the time learners are in Grade 12, they are mastering this section. In terms of GIS, remember that it is a tool that we use to learn Geography. With a good GIS software, for example, learners can be able to determine distance between two places on a map or even ask the computer to draw a cross-section between the two points. Isn't that fantastic!

Geography Ambassadors!

What is it?

This is what UK schools have come up with to encourage learners to take geography as a subject in their school years. Geography ambassadors are selected from those learners who are already doing geography to be role models to inspire and enthuse those who want to choose the subject at option time. They encourage others and engage in lively presentations on all aspects of studying geography and using geography in careers. The main idea is to promote geography in our local schools and encourage the next generation to study geography. The ambassadors themselves gain valuable personal development skills and experience that will build their confidence to be good leaders.

Precisely what material do I need to teach my learners about GIS. It is completely new to me and I need to know exactly what learners are  required to learn in this regard.

First check what the policy (Geography Subject Statement) states about teaching GIS in various grades. Secondly, consult various geography textbooks to check how they  cover those aspects highlited in the curriculum. Then prepare you lessons based on the information gathered from these textbooks. However, I must emphasise that learners need to be grounded in basic concepts, the components of GIS and the fuctional elements (what GIS can do). If your school is fortunate to have computers with GIS software, then you can let learners start experimenting with basic mapwork calculations and show them how fast it is to get answers and get problems solved as compared to when they work answers by themselves.

I think GIS should be introduced at an ealier stage of learning.

GIS helps people to make the world simpler and more understandable. With GIS software it is much easier to change and manipulate the images so they tell the scientic more about what they want to know.GIS is clearly a powerful and useful tool for the manipulation, use and understanding of data.

Have you ever noticed how the global warming has affected the entire universe? We are experiencing so many changes drastically. The recent tsunami hiting Japan and Newzealand; The latest floodings; for some reasons this is so scary to a point whereby it questions someone about the level of human kind existance in 15 years from now.

I cannot agree more with you Monchwe. The effects of Global warming are so glaring these days to such an extent that even a blind man can say "I see". How do we explain the rain that SA experienced during winter (June). However, we must remember that the effects of this phenomenon might be negative in some areas and positive in others. Other places will experience severe droughts while others might experience higher rainfall than the usual.

Re: Exploring Geography Blog- GIS in Geography

Its been a 2 years i have been working with GIS,I learned about it at University and i think its a good thing that its now been taught at high school level. As part of giving back to my community in Ga-Mamabolo, i am going to start teaching Nkoshilo high school Grade 11-12 learners GIS once a month on Saturdays. I know the experience of learning GIS theoretically it can be hard to understand, so i would like to show them practically how interesting it is.And i will also use this chance to give them career guidance and also help them apply for bursaries.

Good day

My name is Tsholo Diphoko and am working at a company called Esri South Africa. We mainly deal with GIS software, however in an attempt to uplift the community we have developed a school friendly software application which facilitates topics within the Mapwork curriculum (grade 10-12) including GIS, integrating the two in an interactive and fun way. It has a lot of practicals that are part paper based and part computer based. Check out more about it using the below link.
